Diving Richelieu Rock

Located to the north of the Similan Islands in the Surin National Park, Richelieu Rock is a famous, world class dive site; the best that Thailand has to offer, and the star of the Andaman Sea. Endorsed by Jacques Cousteau himself, an amazing diversity of marine life can be found at this exceptional site, so if you have the opportunity to dive Richelieu Rock, definitely go!

A huge, crescent-shaped, limestone pinnacle, Richelieu Rock really requires at least two dives to do it justice. At low tide, the jagged peak of the pinnacle just breaks the surface, and descends to 14 – 20m, with a mooring line attached at the eastern tip. The sea bed around the main pinnacle features more huge rocks, which on the southern side create a channel inside the crescent. The scattered rocks extend to around 35m, and then the sandy slopes continue down to more than 40m. Currents here can be strong so extra care is needed, though shelter can be found either inside (south), on the outer side (north) of the pinnacle, depending on the current’s direction.

With red and purple soft corals, anemones and barrel corals, Richelieu’s rocks are blanketed in marine life. Plentiful macro life can be found in cracks and holes, including harlequin, boxer and mantis shrimp, white-eye morays and giant morays with their cleaner shrimp, octopus and cuttlefish, different types of pipefish, and even tigertail seahorses sheltering in the protection of the ornate sea fans.
