Koh Racha Yai

Koh Racha Yai is the larger of the two Racha islands, approximately 1.5 hours south of Phuket . A variety of dive sites are located on the north, east and west coasts of the island.

Koh Racha Yai Information

  • Time to dive site: 1.5 hours by dive boat
  • Diver level: Beginner to intermediate
  • Currents: Mild to moderate
  • Depth: 5 – 22m

The northern coastline offers Siam Bay, which has an average depth of 12 – 18m, and a long reef, parallel to the shoreline with hard corals and a wide variety of reef life. Head deeper into the bay to uncover one of the island’s hidden secrets – a pair of life-size elephant statues lying 20m beneath the waves! Currents inside the bay are mild, although they can become stronger if you venture outside the protection of the inlet.

On the west side of the island is Bungalow Bay (locally known at Batok Bay), a large, open and fairly shallow bay, suitable for beginners and intermediate divers with dive sites along the northern and southern edges. Within the bay, dive sites start at 5m, extending down to 25m as you head west out to sea. The rocky coastline here is home to a wide selection of macro life – morays, lionfish, nudibranchs, butterfly fish, pipefish and much more. Meanwhile, across the sandy bottom of the bay you’ll find outcrops of hard coral with their own reef life to explore.

Despite the unimaginative names “Bay 1” to “Bay 5”, the five bays on the east side of Racha Yai feature the island’s best dive sites. Whether you’re interested in shallow sites with coral gardens, drift dives along rocky walls, and even fishing boat wrecks at 18 – 22m, there is something here for everyone! As well as the usual reef life, huge schools of yellow goat fish, fusiliers and snapper can be seen, plus a school of barracuda regularly puts in an appearance. You can visit batfish inside the wrecks, or cruise across the sand to see if you can spot flounders and Kuhl’s stingrays. Currents inside the bays are generally mild, making it perfect for beginners; venturing further out from the shore can bring moderate currents, usually running north to south.
